A collective approach to virology research
One Virology was formed in 2017 to overcome the organisational barriers of belonging to different Schools (Biosciences, Life Sciences and Veterinary Medicine and Science) across two Faculties.
Together, we’re harnessing our combined expertise to create fresh perspectives, drive exciting projects and make important breakthroughs. This involves building critical mass and seeing real value in working as one, united team. Our research is underpinned by shared doctoral student programmes, regular meetings and scientific seminars, establishing a strong, collaborative future.

A powerful new perspective
A successful application for a Royal Society Wolfson Laboratory Refurbishment Grant led by Professor Jonathan Ball, and significant additional investment from the University of Nottingham, has enabled us to establish the Wolfson Centre for Global Virus Research. The Centre includes The Elms building containing a suite of CL2 laboratories, offices, meeting and work spaces and the Wolfson CL3 Annex, a separate unit with a cell culture facility and two large CL3 laboratories.
“As a powerful, collaborative team, we’re deepening the understanding of viral diseases of people, pets, livestock, wildlife and plants, paving the way for improved diagnosis, treatment and virus control.”
