A collective approach to virology research
The Wolfson Centre for Global Virus Research is a groundbreaking interdisciplinary team of researchers, bringing together expertise in human and veterinary viruses to make new discoveries, broaden scientific understanding and pioneer novel approaches to challenging infections.
We bring together strategic research areas at The University of Nottingham, with 15 principal investigators and around 40 postdoctoral researchers, technicians and postgraduate students from across the schools of Veterinary Medicine and Science, Life Sciences and Biosciences.
Together, we have secured research funding from sources including the EU, MRC, BBSRC, NIHR, DEFRA and NIH (USA), as well as industry and charities. We are working on projects attracting over £16 million in funding (of which £5 million directly supports research at Nottingham) and in the last five years we have published over 200 journal papers collaborating with high profile institutions across Europe, Asia and America. We have contributed to major research programs dealing with the UK's COVID-19 response, including the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine trials and the UK COVID-19 Sequencing Consortium.
A powerful new perspective
Historically, virology research generally focused separately on virus infections within human health or veterinary medicine. We take the approach of bringing together virologists, immunologists and cellular biologists to address the global challenges presented by existing and emerging challenges presented by
We’re harnessing our combined expertise to create fresh perspectives, drive exciting projects and make important breakthroughs. This involves building critical mass and seeing real value in working as one, united team. Our research is underpinned by shared doctoral student programmes, regular meetings and scientific seminars, establishing a strong, collaborative future.
“The Wolfson Centre for Global Virus Research unites experts in virology from across The University of Nottingham. As a powerful, collaborative team, we’re deepening the understanding of viral diseases, paving the way for improved diagnosis, treatment and virus control, and enhancing the health and wellbeing of both people and animals.”
